It’s “not” Complicated-Croque Monsieur

Just got through watching “It’s Complicated” with Meryl Streep and she made this awesome dish for Steve Martin with a gorgeous side salad. Then Alec Baldwin enjoys the leftovers with a little mustard (completely optional)

Croque Monsieur comes from the French (of course) Croquer (meaning “to bite”) and Monsieur (meaning, of course Mister). There is a girl version Croque Madame with a poached egg on top.

I like mine open face, just like the movie….plus less carbs.

  • 2 slices hearty peasant bread, approximately 1/2 inch thick
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 to 4 slices Black forest ham
  • 1 heirloom tomato, sliced
  • 1/2 cup shredded gruyere cheese

Heat oven to 400 degrees and spray a cookie sheet with Pam. Brush one side of the bread with good olive oil make it spread well, it really makes it super crunchy on the bottom, don’t worry about making it soggy, your oven is hot enough to make it nice and crunchy.

Spread the other side of the bread with Mayonnaise, again cover the whole thing edge to edge.

Place the ham and the tomatoes on the mayonnaise side of the bread. I was lucky enough to have Jersey tomatoes on this one 🙂

Spread the cheese over the slices edge to edge again.

Bake for 15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly. Enjoy!!
